Brought the Mits in for its safety inspection today. It failed with flying colors. The engine mounts are broken. Dang!

LOL I just ordered engine mounts for my TL because the most visible one is obviously busted. Passed inspection yesterday with flying colors. Also my TL has zero cats, still passed. "Texas, does your car stop? And is your CEL off? You pass."

On an unrelated note, my parents were shopping for a new car to replace our last new car - a turd-brown 1988 Taurus sedan. For some reason they picked Mitsubishi and my dad was hovering near an '01 Galant with side skirts. Then he saw the Diamante and thankfully bought one. Such a good car - smooth engine, quiet and comfortable ride and probably the most comfortable rear seats I've ever sat in. Then they gave it to my sister, and I died a little inside.

edit: that's what you get for registering in VA - yearly inspections. Thankfully I live in MD so once I buy my car I can let it go to shit like everyone else in this state. Le sigh.

Sounds like SE Wisconsin, minus the brakes part. The rest of a state? Whogivesafuck.

I was intrigued by the Phaeton earlier after thinking "how bad could it be?" The blue book value is pretty attainable right now. So as a Phaeton owner, what are the drawbacks of ownership so far? What are the major maintenance items?

That's like where I live (Delaware county Ohio). Drive your car up to the side of the building, the inspector comes out and reads your VIN and mileage, then you go home with new inspection stickers in hand.

I'm in MD, too. When the muffler fell off my old truck, I just registered it as historic. Done and done.

Besides, I only drive it to Lowes and back anyways.

LOL safety inspections.

My truck passed Colorado tests with a seriously maimed front driver suspension, a bent rear driver axle, one almost siezed drum brake and an exhaust system "fabricated" using a sawzall and the OEM system off my '87 Saab.

The most expensive service is the 80K-mile service. Belts, hoses, water pump, thermostat all get replaced to the tune of $3-4K. Only I needed new bi-xenon headlamp bulbs and four new tires too, so my 80K service came out to $4,912.

An oil change will set you back $150, but you only need it once every 6-8K miles.

It's a common problem for the wiring conduit to wear and break from repeated opening and closing of the trunk. If this happens, you need the wiring harness replaced for around $1,100. Thankfully, this is usually a one-time thing, if it needs to be done at all.

The sealant around the sunroof drains will fail over time if the car spends a lot of time outside in the weather. This happened to me, and the car sustained $1,300 of interior water damage.

If an air strut fails, a replacement strut is around $4k. If you're unlucky enough to have a 2004 model, you have to replace all four due to a design fault. That'll be $16K.

I know it sounds like a horror story, but you'll find the similar costs for a same-era 7-Series or A8. An S-Class or XJ is typically even worse.

Must be nice. Here is CA it's more like "Is your car older than 5 years old?" "Yes? YOU FAIL!"...However if it weren't that way, I wouldn't have my 500, which I love!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I expected to hear. I wonder how hard it would be to do the work myself... and what the parts themselves would cost. I should probably just file this onto the back burner anyway before I go bankrupt.

I loves me some Texas "inspections". As long as you're not in Houston, or Dallas so I've heard. Out here in the "sticks" where I live I've taken some incredibly "no freaking way that could pass inspection" cars with big cams, no cat convertors, just all kindsa things that are totally awry from any new vehicle emissions testing and does anyone have a single f*ck to give? Nope. $14.50. Neeext.

Never seen a mitsu that does not burn oil. Never, from the 4g63's in eclipses to the v6's that chrysler used in the plymouths and dodges. Not a single one can keep oil in the crank case for long. Even the modern ones are quite bad at it. Seems to be if its not broken, it does not run right.....
